Welcome to Save Our Schools-South Bend, IN

Concerning the South Bend Community School Corporation (SBCSC),

 South Bend, IN

Save our schools (SOS) is an organization of parents and taxpayers interested in the welfare of students, community, and schools.

A strong, effective school system enables our community to grow, flourish, and entice home ownership.  SBCSC is in trouble! Constant changes without thinking ahead have brought uncertainty and upheaval to the community.  Morale is low, parents are withdrawing their children and the remaining students face uncertainty.

Campaigns are costly, help our candidates! We must elect a strong board who will fix the problems.

Save Our Schools - SB Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why should the community be concerned over school closings?

When schools close in your district, resale values will also drop.  Potential homeowners want reliable transportation and schools  located close to home.  Active parents want to attend school functions.

2. We don't have children in the SBCSC. So why should I be concerned?

Schools are partially funded through your real estate taxes, whether you have children attending SBCSC or not. Your taxes are at an all-time-high and should be used wisely.

Tax caps went into effect years ago in Indiana. Yet, if you live in the SBCSC boundaries, you have NEVER realized that benefit!  There were general obligation bond debt (2003-2023) that were exempt from the 2010 tax caps that the State of Indiana put into place because the SBCSC acquired this debt for school remodeling.

In June 202o, primary voters approved a $220 million referendum for schools (vote Yes: 10,825. No: 7,188). Thus you will not realize the benefit of tax caps for many years.

If the school board is NOT changed, you will never see the benefit of tax caps.

3. Why should I vote for school board?

  • The education market is  competitive since vouchers are accepted everywhere. But you can only use vouchers IF there is available room.  Enrollment is often closed to out-of-district students.
  • Busy families rely on neighborhood schools, good transportation, and great academics.
  • Parochial schools, charters, private schools, and homeschoolers ALL rely on the SBCSC to provide special services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, etc.  Quality matters!

4. Who should I vote for?

School board elections are non-partisan.  SOS has interviewed every candidate and asked difficult questions of each.

We support the following candidates who have NO "CONFLICTS OF INTEREST"  leaving them to vote freely. Experienced educators and board members.
